SCUM Server Setup

scum setup config survival pvp pve 0 nəfər bunu faydalı hesab etdi

This guide covers how to set up and configure your SCUM dedicated server on Legion Hosting, including first start, GPanel startup variables, PvE vs PvP modes, ServerSettings.ini configuration, connecting to your server, and world management. For admin setup and in-game commands, see SCUM Admin Commands.

Stop your server before editing any configuration files. Always stop your server from the Console tab in GPanel before editing configuration files. Changes made while the server is running may be overwritten or ignored on the next shutdown.

First Start

When you first receive your SCUM server from Legion Hosting, it needs to complete an initial installation before it can be played on.

  1. Log in to GPanel and select your SCUM server from the server list.
  2. Click the Console tab and press Start.
  3. The server will download and install the SCUM dedicated server files via Steam (App ID 3792580). This initial download can take several minutes depending on file size.
  4. Once the download completes, the server will start automatically. SCUM runs through a Wine compatibility layer on the hosting platform, so you may see Wine-related log output during startup -- this is normal and expected.
  5. Wait until you see a message in the console indicating the server is ready and listening for connections. The first boot may take longer than subsequent starts while the server generates initial world data.
Wine-based server. SCUM's dedicated server runs as a Windows application through Wine. You do not need to configure Wine yourself -- the hosting environment handles this automatically. Some console output may include Wine debug messages, which can be safely ignored.

GPanel Startup Variables

Core server settings are configured as startup variables in GPanel. These values are passed to the server process when it launches and take effect on the next start.

  1. In GPanel, select your SCUM server.
  2. Click the Startup tab.
  3. Set the variables listed below. Changes take effect the next time you start or restart the server.
Variable Default Description
SERVER_NAME My SCUM Server The name displayed in the in-game server browser. Make it descriptive so players can find your server easily.
SERVER_DESCRIPTION A short description shown in the server browser when players select your server. Keep it concise and informative.
SERVER_PASSWORD (empty) Password required for players to join. Leave empty for a public server. Set a password if you want to restrict access to invited players only.
MAX_PLAYERS 64 Maximum number of simultaneous players. Should not exceed the slot limit on your hosting plan. Higher player counts require more RAM and CPU.
SERVER_PLAYSTYLE PVP The server playstyle mode. Set to PVP for player-versus-player combat or PVE for player-versus-environment only. See the PvE vs PvP section below for guidance.
Startup variables override config file settings. If a setting is configured both as a startup variable and inside ServerSettings.ini, the startup variable takes precedence. Use startup variables for core identity settings and the INI file for detailed gameplay tuning.

PvE vs PvP

The SERVER_PLAYSTYLE variable determines the core gameplay experience on your server. Choose the mode that best fits your community.

Mode Player Combat Base Raiding Best For
PVP Players can attack and kill each other Players can raid and destroy other players' bases and fortifications Competitive survival, raiding communities, hardcore gameplay
PVE Players cannot damage each other Player structures are protected from other players Cooperative survival, base building focus, casual communities, roleplay servers

PVP is the default and most popular mode for SCUM. Players compete for resources, engage in combat, and can raid each other's bases. This mode appeals to players who want the full survival experience with a competitive edge.

PVE removes player-versus-player damage and base raiding, allowing players to focus on survival mechanics, base building, and cooperation against the environment (puppets, mechs, wildlife). This is a good choice for communities that want a more relaxed experience or for roleplay servers.

You can change the playstyle at any time. Switching between PVP and PVE only requires changing the startup variable and restarting the server. No world wipe is needed. However, communicate the change to your players in advance to avoid confusion.

ServerSettings.ini Configuration

For detailed gameplay tuning beyond the startup variables, edit the ServerSettings.ini file. This file is located at:

SCUM/Saved/Config/WindowsServer/ServerSettings.ini

Open this file through the GPanel Files tab or upload it via SFTP. See the SFTP file upload guide for instructions on connecting with an FTP client.

Key Settings Reference

Setting Default Description
LootRespawnTime 1.0 Multiplier for how quickly loot respawns across the map. Lower values make loot respawn faster; higher values slow it down. A value of 0.5 halves the respawn timer.
VehicleSpawning True Enables or disables vehicle spawns on the map. Set to False to remove vehicles entirely for a more on-foot survival experience.
VehicleSpawnRate 1.0 Multiplier for the number of vehicles that spawn. Higher values increase the number of available vehicles.
PuppetSpawnRate 1.0 Multiplier for puppet (zombie) spawn density. Increase for a more challenging PvE experience, decrease if performance is a concern with high player counts.
AnimalSpawnRate 1.0 Multiplier for wildlife spawn density. Affects hunting and food availability.
BaseBuildingDecayTime 1.0 Multiplier for how quickly unattended player structures decay. Higher values slow decay, giving players more time between visits. Set to 0 to disable decay entirely.
BaseBuildingDamageMultiplier 1.0 Multiplier for damage dealt to player-built structures. Increase for easier raiding on PvP servers, decrease to make bases more durable.
MechSpawnRate 1.0 Multiplier for sentry mech spawn rate. Mechs guard high-value locations and are a significant PvE threat.
FamePointsMultiplier 1.0 Multiplier for fame points (experience) earned from activities. Increase to speed up character progression.
SkillPointsMultiplier 1.0 Multiplier for skill points gained on level up. Higher values let players unlock skills faster.
NightTimeSpeed 1.0 Speed multiplier for the night cycle. Higher values make nights pass faster, which some communities prefer for visibility reasons.
DayTimeSpeed 1.0 Speed multiplier for the day cycle. Adjust alongside NightTimeSpeed to control the overall day/night ratio.

A minimal example ServerSettings.ini:

[/Script/SCUM.ServerSettings]
LootRespawnTime=0.8
VehicleSpawning=True
VehicleSpawnRate=1.5
PuppetSpawnRate=1.2
AnimalSpawnRate=1.0
BaseBuildingDecayTime=2.0
BaseBuildingDamageMultiplier=1.0
MechSpawnRate=1.0
FamePointsMultiplier=1.5
SkillPointsMultiplier=1.0
NightTimeSpeed=2.0
DayTimeSpeed=1.0
Back up your config before making changes. Before editing ServerSettings.ini, download a copy via SFTP or rename the existing file (e.g., ServerSettings.ini.bak) so you can restore it if something goes wrong.
Not all settings require a full restart. Most ServerSettings.ini changes require a server restart to take effect. However, some settings may be overridden by startup variables in GPanel. When in doubt, stop the server, make your changes, and start it again.

How to Connect

There are several ways players can connect to your SCUM server.

In-Game Server Browser

  1. Launch SCUM and click Play Online from the main menu.
  2. In the server browser, use the search bar to find your server by the name you set in SERVER_NAME.
  3. Select your server from the list and click Join.
  4. If a server password is set, you will be prompted to enter it before connecting.
Server not appearing? Newly started servers can take up to 5-10 minutes to appear in the server browser. Use direct connect or Steam favorites in the meantime. Also ensure the server is fully started and shows as Online in GPanel.

Steam Favorites

  1. Open the Steam client and click View in the top menu bar, then Game Servers.
  2. Click the Favourites tab, then click Add a server.
  3. Enter your server's IP and query port in the format IP:PORT. Find these in the GPanel Network tab. See the IP and port guide for help.
  4. Click Add this address to favourites. Your server will now appear in the favourites list.
  5. Right-click the server entry and select Connect, or launch SCUM and find it in the in-game browser under the Favourites filter.

Direct Connect

  1. Launch SCUM and go to the Play Online server browser.
  2. Look for a Direct Connect option and enter your server's IP and game port as shown in GPanel's Network tab.
  3. Click Connect.

For details on locating your server's IP address and ports, see How to Find Your Server IP and Port.

World Management

Managing your SCUM server's world data includes making backups and performing world wipes when needed.

Save Backups

SCUM saves world data automatically at regular intervals. To create a manual backup:

  1. Stop your server from the GPanel Console tab to ensure all data is written to disk.
  2. Open the GPanel Files tab and navigate to:
    SCUM/Saved/
  3. Download the SaveFiles directory (or the relevant save data folder) to your local machine using the GPanel file manager or SFTP. This contains your world data, player data, and base information.
  4. Store the backup in a safe location. Label it with the date so you can identify it later.
Schedule regular backups. If you are running a public server with active players, download a backup at least once a week. This protects against data corruption, accidental wipes, and allows you to roll back if an update causes issues.

World Wipe (Full Reset)

A world wipe resets all player progress, base buildings, vehicles, inventories, and world state back to a fresh start. This is useful when starting a new season, after major game updates, or if your world data becomes corrupted.

This action is permanent and cannot be undone. All player characters, bases, items, vehicles, and progression will be permanently deleted. Create a backup before wiping and notify your players in advance.
  1. Stop your server from the GPanel Console tab.
  2. Open the GPanel Files tab and navigate to:
    SCUM/Saved/
  3. Delete the SaveFiles directory (or rename it to SaveFiles.bak to keep a backup).
  4. Optionally, also delete any player database files in the Saved directory if you want to reset player progression completely.
  5. Start your server. Fresh save data will be generated automatically on the next boot.
Communicate wipes to your players. Announce wipe dates at least a few days in advance through Discord, your server description, or in-game announcements. Players invest significant time into their progress, and advance notice helps retain your community.
