This guide covers admin setup, player management, server management, Workshop content, and troubleshooting for your Tower Unite dedicated server on Legion Hosting. For initial server setup, game modes, and connection instructions, see Tower Unite Server Setup Guide.

Server Panel: All server management is done through GPanel at gpanel.legionhosting.net. File management can be done through the Files tab or via SFTP. See How to Upload Files via SFTP for SFTP instructions.

Admin Setup

Tower Unite dedicated servers use Steam IDs to identify administrators. Server owners can grant admin privileges to specific players by adding their Steam IDs to the server configuration.

Adding Admins

  1. Stop your server in GPanel.
  2. Navigate to the Files tab and locate the server configuration file.
  3. Add the Steam ID (Steam64 format) of each player you want to grant admin access to the admin list.
  4. Save the file and restart the server.

Finding a Player's Steam ID

You can find a player's Steam64 ID by:

  • Visiting their Steam profile and using a Steam ID lookup tool (such as steamid.io).
  • Checking the server console output when the player connects — their Steam ID is typically logged on join.
Use Steam64 IDs: Tower Unite uses the 64-bit Steam ID format (a long number starting with 7656119...). Other formats like SteamID3 or the old STEAM_0: format will not work.

Admin Commands

Admin commands can be executed through the server console in GPanel or by admins in-game through the chat. The following table lists commonly used admin commands:

Command Description
kick <player> Kicks a player from the server. They can reconnect immediately.
ban <player> Bans a player from the server. They will be unable to reconnect until unbanned.
unban <player> Removes a ban, allowing the player to reconnect.
mute <player> Mutes a player, preventing them from using text and voice chat.
unmute <player> Unmutes a previously muted player.
players Lists all currently connected players with their Steam IDs.
say <message> Sends a server-wide announcement message.
status Displays server status including player count, current mode, and uptime.
Console vs in-game: Commands typed directly into the GPanel console execute with full server privileges. In-game admin commands may require a prefix (such as /) and only work for players listed in the admin configuration.

Player Management

Kicking and Banning

Use the kick and ban commands to remove disruptive players. Bans are persistent and stored in the server's ban list file.

  • Kick: Immediately disconnects the player. They can rejoin unless also banned.
  • Ban: Disconnects and prevents the player from reconnecting. The ban persists across server restarts.
  • Unban: Use the unban command with the player's name or Steam ID to remove the ban.

Managing the Ban List

The ban list is stored as a file in the server directory. You can manually edit this file through GPanel's Files tab or via SFTP to add or remove entries. Each entry contains the banned player's Steam ID.

Muting Players

The mute command silences a player in both text and voice chat. This is useful for handling spam or abusive behavior without kicking the player. Mutes do not persist across server restarts unless managed through a configuration file.


Server Management

Restarting the Server

You can restart your server at any time through the GPanel Console tab:

  1. Click Stop to gracefully shut down the server.
  2. Wait for the server to fully stop.
  3. Click Start to bring it back online.

Alternatively, use the Restart button for a combined stop-and-start operation.

Updating the Server

Tower Unite receives regular updates from PixelTail Games. When an update is released:

  1. Stop your server in GPanel.
  2. Go to the Startup tab and trigger a reinstall or update if a button is available. This will re-run SteamCMD to download the latest server files.
  3. Start the server. The console will show the updated version on boot.
Version mismatch: Players must be on the same game version as the server. After an update, players who have not updated their game client will be unable to connect. Updates are typically pushed through Steam automatically.

Monitoring Performance

Use GPanel's resource graphs to monitor CPU, RAM, and network usage. Tower Unite servers are generally lightweight, but high player counts with extensive Workshop content can increase resource usage. Key indicators:

  • High CPU: Typically caused by large player counts or heavy game mode activity.
  • High RAM: Often caused by many players loading Workshop items simultaneously.
  • Network spikes: Normal during player joins as Workshop content is synchronized.

Workshop Content

Tower Unite heavily integrates with the Steam Workshop. Players can use custom models, player models, and other Workshop items in the game. This content is managed at the client level through Steam, not on the server.

How Workshop Content Works

  • Player models and items: Players download Workshop content through their Steam client. When they use custom items on your server, other players who have the same Workshop items subscribed will see them. Players without the items see default replacements.
  • Condo items: Custom Workshop furniture and decorations are used in Condos. These are loaded from each player's local Workshop subscriptions.
  • No server-side Workshop management: Unlike some games, Tower Unite's Workshop content does not need to be installed on the server. The server facilitates synchronization between clients.
Workshop performance: Servers with many players using complex Workshop models may experience higher network usage during player connections. This is normal behavior as the game synchronizes player appearances and items.

Troubleshooting

Server Not Appearing in Browser

  • Confirm the server is fully started and showing as online in GPanel.
  • Wait 1–2 minutes after startup for the server to register with the master server list.
  • Check the console for any errors during startup.
  • Ensure your server name is set — servers with blank names may not appear correctly.

Players Cannot Connect

  • Verify the server is online in GPanel and the console shows no errors.
  • If the server is password-protected, ensure players are entering the correct password.
  • Check that players are running the same version of Tower Unite as the server. Version mismatches prevent connections.
  • Have players try direct connect using the server IP and port. See How to Find Your Server IP and Port.

High Latency or Lag

  • Check GPanel resource usage graphs for CPU or RAM bottlenecks.
  • Reduce SERVER_MAX_PLAYER if the server is consistently struggling under load.
  • Tower Unite performance is generally smooth, but large gatherings in the Plaza with many Workshop items can cause temporary lag spikes.
  • If performance issues persist, consider upgrading your server plan. Open a support ticket to discuss options.

Server Crashes

  • Check the GPanel console for error messages before the crash occurred.
  • Ensure your server files are up to date. A reinstall through the Startup tab can fix corrupted files.
  • If crashes are consistent, note the circumstances (player count, activity at the time) and open a support ticket with this information.

Configuration Changes Not Taking Effect

  • Always stop the server before making configuration changes.
  • Verify you saved the file after editing.
  • Restart the server after making changes for them to take effect.
  • Some startup variables in GPanel override values in configuration files. Check the Startup tab if your file-based changes seem to be ignored.
