Open Fortress Server Setup Guide

This guide covers how to set up your Open Fortress dedicated server on Legion Hosting, configure startup variables, edit server.cfg, and connect to your server. Open Fortress is a free Team Fortress 2 mod that introduces new gamemodes, weapons, characters, and maps built on the Source engine. For admin commands, SourceMod/MetaMod support, and troubleshooting, see Open Fortress Admin Commands.

Note: Open Fortress runs on the Source engine (Source SDK Base 2013 Multiplayer). If you have experience with other Source engine servers (TF2, CS:GO, Garry's Mod), many settings and commands will be familiar.

1. First Start

  1. Log in to GPanel and select your Open Fortress server.
  2. Go to the Startup tab and review the configurable variables (see Section 2).
  3. Set your preferred starting map via SRCDS_MAP (default is dm_2fort).
  4. Return to the Console tab and click Start.
  5. Wait for the console to display a message containing gameserver Steam ID to confirm the server is ready.
First start may take a while. The server downloads Source SDK Base 2013, TF2 assets, and Open Fortress files on initial setup. This can take several minutes.

2. GPanel Startup Variables

VariableDefaultDescription
SRCDS_MAPdm_2fortMap loaded on start. Must be a valid map name.
MAXPLAYERS24Maximum concurrent players (max 32).
SRCDS_GAMEopen_fortressGame directory name. Do not change.
Ports are randomly assigned unless you have a private IP. Check the Network tab in GPanel for your server's IP and port. See How to Find Your Server IP and Port for details.

3. Server Configuration (server.cfg)

For detailed settings, edit server.cfg. Stop the server before making changes.

File Location

open_fortress/cfg/server.cfg

Uses standard Source engine key "value" syntax, one setting per line.

Key Settings

SettingDefaultDescription
hostname(empty)Server name shown in the server browser.
sv_password(empty)Join password. Empty = public server.
rcon_password(empty)Remote console password for admin access.
maxplayers24Maximum concurrent players.
mp_timelimit0Time limit per map in minutes. 0 = no limit.
mp_fraglimit0Frag limit to end the round. 0 = no limit.
sv_alltalk0Cross-team voice chat. 1 = enabled.

Example server.cfg

hostname "My Legion Open Fortress Server"
sv_password ""
rcon_password "MySecretRcon"
maxplayers 24
mp_timelimit 15
mp_fraglimit 30
sv_alltalk 0
Keep your RCON password secret. Anyone with the RCON password has full control over your server. Use a strong, unique password.

4. Game Modes and Maps

Open Fortress includes several game modes with mode-specific maps. Map prefixes indicate the mode:

PrefixGame ModeDescription
dm_DeathmatchFree-for-all combat. Most kills wins.
tdm_Team DeathmatchTeam-based deathmatch.
ctf_Capture the FlagClassic CTF mode.
koth_King of the HillControl the point to win.
cp_Control PointsCapture and hold control points.
gg_Gun GameCycle through weapons with each kill.
inf_InfectionZombie-style infection mode.

Popular maps include: dm_2fort, dm_wiseau, dm_harvest, ctf_2fort, koth_harvest.

5. Map Rotation (mapcycle.txt)

Edit open_fortress/cfg/mapcycle.txt to set the map rotation. List one map per line:

dm_2fort
dm_wiseau
dm_harvest
ctf_2fort
koth_harvest

6. How to Connect

Option A -- Server Browser

  1. Launch Open Fortress via Steam.
  2. Click Find Servers or Multiplayer.
  3. Search for your server by name.
  4. Select your server and click Connect.

Option B -- Console Connect

  1. Open the console (~).
  2. Type:
    connect <your-server-ip>:<port>
