This guide covers admin commands, game modes, map management, and server administration for your Cube 2: Sauerbraten server. For initial setup, see Cube 2: Sauerbraten Server Setup Guide.

1. Admin Access

Sauerbraten uses a "master" and "admin" system for server control. Claim admin status in-game by opening the console (/) and typing:

/setmaster your_admin_password

This uses the CUBE_ADMINPASSWORD set in the GPanel Startup tab. Once authenticated, you gain master/admin privileges for the session.

2. Admin Commands

Command Description
/kick [cn] Kick a player by client number.
/spectator [0/1] [cn] Force a player into spectator mode.
/mastermode [mode] Set master mode (0=open, 1=veto, 2=locked, 3=private).
/map [name] [mode] Change the current map and game mode.
/clearbans Clear all active bans.
/pausegame [0/1] Pause or unpause the game.
/persist [0/1] Keep teams persistent across map changes.

3. Master Modes

Mode Name Description
0 Open Anyone can claim master and change maps/modes.
1 Veto Only the master can change maps, others can vote.
2 Locked Only the master controls the server. New players are spectators.
3 Private No new connections allowed.

4. Game Modes

Change the game mode using /map [name] [mode]. Common modes:

ffaFree-for-AllStandard deathmatch.
instaInstagibOne-shot kills with the rifle.
efficEfficiencyAll weapons, no pickups.
tacticsTacticsRandom weapon spawns each life.
captureCaptureTeam-based base capture mode.
ctfCapture the FlagClassic CTF with team flags.
coop editCooperative EditCollaborative map editing mode.

Example: /map complex insta loads the "complex" map in Instagib mode.

5. Cooperative Map Editing

Sauerbraten's unique feature is in-game cooperative map editing. To enable it:

  1. Change to coop edit mode: /map [name] coop edit
  2. All connected players can now edit the map in real time.
  3. Use /sendmap to share the current map state with the server.
  4. Use /getmap to download the latest map version.
Tip: Set /mastermode 2 (locked) during editing sessions to prevent random players from joining and disrupting the editing process.

6. Troubleshooting

  • Server not in browser: Verify the master server is set to sauerbraten.org and the server is fully started.
  • Cannot claim master: Ensure the admin password is correct. The command is /setmaster password.
  • High bandwidth usage: Reduce CUBE_MAXPLAYERS. Sauerbraten bandwidth scales exponentially with player count.
  • Map not found: Only built-in maps are available by default. Custom maps need to be uploaded via SFTP.
